Family History Research is Addictive!
You'll Catch The Genealogy Bug!

So, what is the difference between genealogy and family history?

Genealogy is constructing a family tree: the names of your ancestors; dates of birth, marriage and death; whereas family history will have the same information fleshed out with as much detail as you can find: occupations, addresses, photographs, stories, medical histories.

Put leaves and blossom on your family tree! Become the family's historian. One hundred years from now, your descendants will know who you are and be grateful for the legacy you will leave.

There are said to be nearly as many reasons to research family history as there are genealogists. Perhaps you have heard stories of a famous or infamous ancestor? I got the bug when I asked why my grandfather had an unusual middle name: 'Southcott'. I learned this was the surname of a famous forbearer Joanne Southcott, a phophetess born in Devon in 1750 and who supposedly buried a message from God in a box to be opened by 24 bishops. Joanne had many thousands of followers and even today she is still revered - her box has yet to be opened.

Whatever your reasons for wanting to research your family history, this site will hopefully help you along the way. You will find a beginners' guide, sources of information, tips and many links to other sites that will assist you in your search.

The role of family historian will require the skills of a private detective, the patience of a saint and bags of determination. It's also great fun! And as the great man once said:

"In all of us there is a hunger marrow deep to know our heritage, to know who we are and where we come from. Without this enriching knowledge there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainment in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness"Alex Haley, author of Roots.
