Death Certificates - Information
Death certificates are often under-utilised when researching your UK family history. In fact, they are a useful source of background information and can give clues as to other relatives. They can also establish the person’s year of birth.
A certificate contains the following information:
- Place and date of death
- Name and surname
- Sex
- Age
- Occupation
- Cause of death
- Signature, description and residence of the informant
- Date of registration
- Signature of the registrar
Example

The picture shows the certificate for a Margaret Gawler, who died in the Poland Street workhouse in St Pancras, London, England, in 1845. The informant is a nurse, Elizabeth Martin, who signs with her mark.
